VW Parts Hoard
This is a list of parts, in no particular order, that I have in my parts hoard. Lots of duplicates (that aren't always in the same box), so if you see something twice, there's probably at least two of them.
- DRAKE DRY SUMP -
This is for a nearly complete Dry Sump setup, All Built by Drake. This has the pump, the pulleys, and the scavenge pan. I bought this years ago for huge money, and I have neer run it. I do not know the condition of the internals of the pump, but it does turn. It isn't like a turbo that "spins" but when you crank the keyed shaft, the impeller inside spins. Please assume you will need to service this if you want to run it. All the parts shown are included. Note especially the big metal bracket that bolts to the pulley side of the engine to run both Mechanical FI, and the Dry Sump. Note also the presence of the correct water flanges, and most of the hardware in the baggie. I do not know what, if anything is missing, but I bought this as a "complete" kit, but again... this isn't a kit from Techtonics or something... This is a vintage racing part, and should be treated as such.
-DRAKE MECHANICAL FI INTAKE HORNS -
These are two intake manifolds, and one set of the correct Drake Horns. I do not have the Mechanical FI or the injectors, but this set has the butterflies i the intake in one set, and not in the other. Pretty dang baller.
- Original DRAKE sticker on an 8v intake -
This one is just for fun or display. I bought this a long time ago, and have hung on to it for display. This is just a stock 8v Fuel injected air intake with a Drake Sticker. Not rocket science, but where else you gonna get one, eh? Like I said... I am a hoarder.
- DRAKE 8v Carb Cam -
This cam I have had for a long time (never ran it) and as best I can tell it is the Cam Drake ground to work with big carbs. As you can see, this is a BIG lobe cam, and is clearly designed for racing. I could find no flat spots (though I haven't run it). Set up for 8v cars, and works with the Cam gear obviously.
- BONUS Weird Drake part - V8 boat intake? -
OK, so this DEFINITELY has nothing to do with 8v VW engines, but I bought it on eBay years ago. I believe this is some sort of a Ram air carb/TB intake adapter for running a V8 in Boats. In his later years, John Drake was very innovative with Boat racing, and I believe this is from that effort. Anyway, it looks bad arse.
- PARTS that go with the head -
OK, so this isn't a glamour shot, but these are all the parts that go with the head.
1.) Lifters (on the left in the pic) 2.) Complete, brand new set of ARP head studs and nuts - never used. 3.) Complete set of Titanium Valve Spring Retainers. Bought from Autotech and never used. 4.) Complete set of HD inner and out valve springs - Also from Autotech, and they are needed if you want to run that beast of a cam. 5.) Drake Valves - these came with the head, and I am not 100% sure what they are made out of, but they are in beautiful shape and match the head. 6.) BONUS - tiny little sleeves for the valve stems FROM DRAKE. I got those as a present from an old friend who had them in the back of his vintage SoCal racing shop. The whole set isn't there, but they are real Drake. 7.) Not pictured - there's also a box of stuff (incomplete) that came with the head when I got it. Retainers, etc. Not a complete set, but included.
- DRAKE prepared 8v head - 1.7L -
OK, so this doesn't have a Drake stamp on it or anything, because Drake didn't actually CAST 1.7L heads. They DID cast 16v heads (before VW did), but I do not have one of those. Search, and you'll find pictures of them on the web. Drake was building motors before the 1.8L JH head/block came out, so most of his stuff was designed to work with the 1.7L stuff. So this will mate to a 1.7L block or a 1.6L block (which was my plan). This has had the intakes done by Drake, and is a nicely done head.
And just to cut off the argument, yes... you can make more power with a run of the mill 2.0L 16V than you ever could with this head. This is a dinosaur, and a part of vintage racing, not some secret weapon that will "smoke Integras" or whatever. I think most of the hooligans and children are gone from the MK1 forums these days, but I feel like I had to put that in.
- DRAKE 8v Adjustable CAM GEAR -
This is probably the least rare thing in here, but it is a part of the overall "look" nevertheless. These can be used on any old 8v motor (and many do), but they were designed to work with the SuperVee motors. In excellent shape.
Here's a picture of the Drake Catalog showing the Cam
Drake Upper Strut bar. Powercoated (professionally) black.
This is (or at least I think it is) a Dry Sump Oil Reservoir for a Super Vee Style engine with Dry sump. You could use it for whatever you wanted, I am sure, but that is its intended purpose. Notice the Super nice construction, high quality welds, and nice AN fittings. The cap on top is an oil filler style cap, and seals well.
This is a used, baffled SCAT oil pan.
Tshirts. Size L. Worn, but classic "Poor Richards" shirts (and a Tomas Sport Tuning shirt)
These are TWO sets (left, right and rear) Woodgrain kits for 2 Door Rabbits.
Here's a scan of the original brochure showing those installed. The brochre shows a 4 door, and these sets are for a 2DOOR.
This is a bunch of stuff. Notice the panel for gauges, the Steering shaft bearing (NOS), and the Oil Pressure Sending unit (upper left in the bag). Those are expensive, and hard to find. The "disc" in the lower ziploc is a throwout bearing.
Two hats, Two new Belts, a shift boot from an MK2, a shift boot from a Fox, lower left is metal Dash Brackets. The upper right is a Porsche 944 Leather boot. The chrome mirror is a VW non-MK1 mirror.
More pics of that mirror here:
5x brand new A1 ball joints, two front motor mounts, Two side (both sides, including the Tranny mount) mounts. Shock bushings, Steering rack boots (both sides), and a full set of wheel bearings. Also see the Exhaust gasket with the correct copper bolts. Lastly, those two in the upper left are A arm bushings, the good rubber ones, not the cruddy poly ones.
Bunch of badges. None of these particularly expensive or rare, except for the black VW badge with both pins.
This is the early Rabbit three pod console.
Powdercoated Gas tank strap (left) and powercoated front window divider (the things that go in between the front window roll up or down glass and the wing windows. These were professionally powdercoated, and in PERFECT shape.
New Clutch, pressure plate combo. Box is a little jacked, but it is new with all the clips and stuff.
Exhaust Heat Shield, not all bent and messed up. I like these.
2X used METAL early swallowtail turn and washer combos. THese are the 4 bolt ones.
Brand new (Expensive) and never used Jacobs setup for 4 cylinder. These are awesome, and easy to install. Was planning to hide all the parts behind the firewall, and clean up all the wires and stuff in the bay using this. I think this was like 350.00 new.
Brand New GERMAN made Oil pump. Not the craptastic ones you get at AutoZone. This is the good one.
NOS 1.5L pistons.
Big box of Sunroof parts. I always hated that every stupid sunroof breaks in the same way, so I saved up a PILE of those little srongs and brackets, because they were always rusted on cars I bought.
Remanned Starter for Manual Shift 020.
This next few is of an NOS 30 over 1.7L crank with all the correct bearings. This is a SWEET little kit, with all the correct parts.
This is a Hella H4 headlamp for a Jetta MK1 (with Euro City lamp provisons).
Thing on the left is a new sticker to go around the fuel filler tube where the gas cap goes. The stuff on the right are uncracked dash vents for the German Dashes. And that little black plastic strip is for the trim on an early Dash.
Thing on the left is the boot that goes UNDER the car to protect where the bottom of the shifter stick meets the gear selector bar. These are always trashed, and this one is a brand new in the bag part. The thing on the right is a NOS oil pan baffle for the large pans. Snaps around the oil pump.
Original, still in the box (with the stickers!) Avon MUSK cologne. This still has all the cologne in it (though it probably smells like Sex Panther at this point). Hoarding has no limits, right?
This is the "in between" years levers. Notice they are plastic, and three bolt, but they don't have the same "bent" shape that the later, common ones have. Nice touch to add to any later car.
Yes. I even bought the Franklin Mint 100% Silver commemorative bar!
This is 1000 grains of Silver. That means this is worth 60.00 or so in bullion alone. :)
Professionally Powdercoated front "external release" early hoodlatch.
This is actually (I believe, and it was sold to me as such, but no markings) a Drake sourced Dual Downpipe. You don't need this if you use the header, and this wasn't part of the exhaust kit, I just stored them together. Ignore the Muffler on the right and the aluminized Exhaust on the left. Those are gone.
